Drama(tic) First Impression of: My Secret Romance

I consider myself as a romantic person. As a sucker for cliche romances (or honestly, any romance) K-dramas became a significant part of my personal definition of romance, love, and #couplegoals. You might be wondering, "what's K-dramas?".

Well, my friend, I'll let google explain it to you.

Korean dramas are different than American or European tv-shows. It's literally its own genre of entertainment, and a huge part of Korean pop culture. Even if you never were interested in watching K-drama I highly recommend giving it a try. There's so much more than romances and I'm sure there's something for everyone.

I think this introduction is more than enough so let's get started with the review of...

My Secret Romance (애타는 로맨)

Starring Sung Hoon and Song Ji Eun, this new romantic comedy appears to be nothing new or original. The short synopsis of the story tells us about two young people, who had a one night stand, and then by accident meet again. The only issue is they are working together and they need to keep their past in an intimate secret. But with time they start to actually fall in love, which only complicates everything even more.

Sung Hoon plays Cha Jin-Wook, a young heir and (probably) future CEO of a huge company. Song Ji Eun plays Lee Yoo-Mi, an unsuccessful cook, who has troubles with finding a stable job. Even though she loves to cook she's not especially talented in this field.

I actually love the idea of the show. As a sucker for romance I was very excited to watch it, and I still am! The only thing is, I skipped a lot while watching the first episode. And that's not a good sign. There are too many unnecessary scenes. For example, the first scene at the club. We are  introduced to main characters and we get the feel of their personalities, which is important, but we don't need more than that. We know Cha Jin-Wook is a bad boy, a playboy, a spoiled brat, and so on. We don't need that scene to learn about this because this part of his personality is showing over and over again. But there are good parts of this episode as well.

Why I liked it?

  • Comedy - I'm not sure if this is the same actor, but there's this one character (from My Secret Romance and Noble My Love) that always makes me smile . I'm talking about the Chairman's secretary and Cha Jin-Wook's babysitter (aka The Pink Suit Guy). Also, I generally love reactions characters have in this show. They're big, loud, very physical (I guess that's a good thing?), and human-like.
  • Good acting - at some points you can see the fascination in Cha Jin-Wook's eyes, when he looks at Lee Yoo-Mi. I also love Sung Hoon's acting in general. I fell in love with this bad boy while watching Noble My Love.
  • It touches a very interesting topic -- pornography. Lee Yoo-Mi's mother was an erotic actress. Even though her daughter is ashamed of that part of her mother's past, the actress is proud of who she was. This brings up a huge conflict in their relationship but also puts a female pride of her career under question -- not only herself but to the audience as well.

Why I disliked it?

  • Unnecessary scenes - like I mentioned before, the first episode has too many moments that are pointless. This is the major reason why I might not watch the show. I don't like to skip around, but at some moments I'm simply bored.
  • "You need to find a man" thing - it's almost in all K-drama romances. A clumsy girl hears from her family and friends she needs to find a husband and only then she'll be happy (more like her family). I don't like this concept, but I won't hate it as there's no way to escape it. Although, I wish to see a change in this at some point.

Will I continue watching it? Yes. I'll give this show another chance. I'm curious how they'll show both characters after the one night stand. How much time will pass? How will they deal with... all of that?

I would rate the first episode of My Secret Romance at 3.5/5 stars.
